Lions come up short in Regional Quarter Final

TRENTON — The Saltillo Lions traveled to Trenton High School to take on Slidell No. 5 Slidell in the Regional Quarter Final round of the playoffs. Saltillo earned a bye in the opening round and beat Henrietta Midway, 64-44, in the Area round.

Slidell opened the game with a 10-1 run in the first five minutes of the game. The Lions were able to answer back with a pair of buckets to pull the score to 10-5 with 1:59 left in the first quarter. Saltillo wouldn’t score again in the frame and trailed 15-5 entering the second quarter.

The Lions opened the second quarter by scoring in the opening minute. The two teams traded baskets until Saltillo made a run to get the score back within 5 at 19-14 with 4:08 left in the half. Slidell controlled the remainder of the half, going on a 12-1 run. The Lions went into the locker room trailing 31-15.

Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage over the other in the opening minutes of the half. Saltillo was able to keep the deficit where it was and found themselves down 35-20 with 4:09 left in the frame. The Lions did their best to go on a run but trailed 45-27 entering the fourth quarter.

The closest Saltillo would get for the rest of the game was within 14 points, as they were down 51-37 with 2:51 left to play. The Lions were able to score just 4 more points, and lost the game 62-40.

The Saltillo Lions end their season in the Regional Quarter Finals, going 30-5 on the season. The Lions went on multiple winning streaks this season, including a five-game winning streak to open the season. They also went on a 14-game winning streak in the middle of their season and finally a 12-game winning streak that included going 10-0 in district play and winning their first two playoff games.
