Lions blow out Avinger at home

Boekhorst drops 25, Redburn 20

SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lions hosted Avinger Friday for their third district game of the season. The Lions entered the game with some momentum, as winners in four of their last five games, including an 80-46 blowout win over Yantis in their most recent game.

Saltillo picked up where they left off in their win over Yantis, outscoring Avinger 25-2 in the opening frame of Friday’s game. The Lions followed it with another 22 points in the second quarter, taking a 47-10 lead at the half.

Saltillo’s offensive production slowed down in the second half, scoring just 12 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth quarter. The Lions allowed 25 total points in the second half, and walked away with an easy 74-35 win.

Chris Boekhorst and Andrew Redburn were the leading scorers for Saltillo. Boekhorst finished with 25 points, and Redburn finished with 20 points, outscoring Avinger by 10 points between the two of them. Also finishing in double-digits was Gunner Tarver who had 13 points of his own.

Other scorers for the Lions were David Whitworth with nine points, Colton McGill with five points and Coy Collins with two points.

The win gets Saltillo back to .500 on the year at 8-8, but they remain undefeated in district play at 3-0.

The junior varsity played a much closer game, getting out to a 28-18 lead, before giving up a fourth quarter comeback in which they lost by a final score 31-30.

Justice Burke was the leading scorer with 10 points. Ethan White followed him with six points, as Josh Butler had five points, Cristian Trejo had four points, Jacob Sexton had three points and Jordan Metcalf had two points.

Saltillo plays again Friday on the road at Avery. The junior varsity girls are set to begin at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams all to follow.
