The Sulphur Springs Ladycats opened district play Saturday with a home loss to Royse City 65-41. After having the game moved back from Friday night due to weather, Sulphur Springs hosted Royse City on a rare Saturday game.

Royse City jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the opening minutes of the game and extended that lead to 25-7 by the end of the first quarter.

Sulphur Springs did a much better job in the second quarter of breaking the Royse City full court press and setting up their own offense. This forced Royse City to run more offense as well, not being able to get as many transition points off of turnover.

In the third quarter, Royse City fell back into a half court defense, and the Lady Cats answered with their highest-scoring quarter of the day, putting up 13 points. They also allowed 13 points in the quarter however, keeping the deficit exactly what it was and trailing 52-31 entering the fourth quarter.

Sulphur Springs scored another 10 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to get back into the game. They lost by a final score of 65-41.

Nylah Lindley and Hannah Cordell led the team in scoring with 11 points each. Other scorers for the Lady Cats were Bre’asia Ivery with 4, Addisyn Wall 4, Dalanee Myles 4, Kate Womack 2 and Colbria Harrison 2.

Sulphur Springs will play again Tuesday Jan. 14 at home against Lindale, with the Freshmen team starting at 5 p.m. and the JV and Varsity to follow.
