CUMBY — The Cumby Lady Trojans began their district schedule Tuesday by welcoming their Hopkins County rival, the North Hopkins Lady Panthers, to Cumby High School. The Lady Trojans would get off to a strong district start with a 14-4 victory.

The top of the first inning would see the Lady Panthers jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Lady Trojans would respond with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kinslee Dowdle, Neely Hammond, Harly Pence, Ella Horne, and Erin Morgan all scored, as the Lady Trojans pulled ahead 5-3.

After the Lady Panthers were held scoreless in the top of the second inning, the Lady Trojans would add five more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ashlyn Hudson, Hammond, Pence, Horne, and Morgan all scored, as the Lady Trojans raised their lead to 10-3.

Following another scoreless inning for the Lady Panthers, Hammond would score another run in the bottom of the third inning, bringing the score to 11-3. After a scoreless fourth inning for North Hopkins, Bella Faulknor scored in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Lady Trojans’ lead climbed to 12-3.

Though the Lady Panthers would score a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the score to 12-4, the Lady Trojans would score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, coming from Hammond and Pence, to end the game, capping off a 14-4 victory.

As a team, the Lady Trojans batted 18 for 31 (.581) from the plate. Horne, Morgan, and Pence all recorded three hits each. Hammond and Kadee Pettit added two hits each, while Jenna Bearden, Lilly Campbell, Dowdle, Faulknor, and Hudson added one hit each.

Hammond would be the leading scorer with four runs. Pence was right behind with three runs. Horne and Morgan scored two runs each, while Dowdle, Faulknor, and Hudson scored one run each.

Hammond earned the victory in the circle. Across four innings, she struck out 10 batters and only conceded one hit, one walk, and three runs (one earned). In one relief inning, Pence struck out two batters and only gave up two walks and one run.

With the win, the Lady Trojans are now 1-0 in district and 3-1 overall. Their next game is Friday, when they welcome the Cooper Dogettes to Cumby High School.
