Hammond leads team with 7 kills

CUMBY—The Cumby Lady Trojans hosted Boles Friday night for the final non-district match of the season. The Lady Trojans were looking to get back into the win column after taking their first loss of the year to Blue Ridge, 3-1.

Boles opened the match by scoring on the first two possessions, but Cumby quickly answered back, scoring four consecutive points. The Lady Trojans never gave the lead back and took the first set, 25-15.

Boles opened the second set the same way, scoring on the first two possessions, but Cumby answered back with a 9-2 run, forcing Boles to call a timeout with the Lady Trojans leading, 9-5. Cumby was able to build their lead to 20-12 before Boles went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 20-16. The Lady Trojans finished the set on 5-1 run, to take the second set by a score of 25-17.

Looking to complete the three-set sweep, Cumby opened the third set by scoring three consecutive points. Boles answered back with a 5-1 run to take their first lead of the game with the score 5-4. Cumby coach Erin Bowers used a timeout to regroup, and her team answered by taking the lead and never looking back.

The Lady Trojans dominated the remainder of the set and finished the sweep by a final score of 25-15.

Neely Hammond led the way offensively, finishing with seven kills. Ashlyn Hudson and Azlyn Hornsby were right behind her with six kills each. Erin Morgan set them up, tallying 18 assists in the game.

Defensively, the Lady Trojans were led by Rylee Krotky and Kaylee Boyd who had 16 digs and 11 digs, respectively.

The win makes Cumby 3-1 on the season. All three of their wins have been 3-0 sweeps. Coverage of their Tuesday night matchup against Yantis will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
