CUMBY—The Cumby Lady Trojans hosted the Miller Grove Lady Hornets Friday for the third district game of the season. The Lady Trojans won each of their first two district battles, each by score of 3-0.

The Lady Trojans opened the match, taking a 9-5 lead in the opening set and never looking back. Miller Grove was able to cut the deficit to 21-19, but the Lady Trojans ended the set on a 4-1 run, taking the first, 25-20.

Miller Grove answered back in the second set, with Lainy Burnett scoring three consecutive points on kills to give the Lady Hornets an early 7-1 lead in the set. Cumby tried to rally back, going on a 9-4 run late to tie things up, 24-24.

Miller Grove was able to take a one point lead before putting the set away with yet another Burnett kill. It was one of over five kills for Burnett in the set.

The Lady Hornets kept their momentum going in the third set, getting out to a quick 11-6 lead. Head Coach Erin Bowers called a timeout with her team, trailing 14-11, hoping to help her team regroup.

Miller Grove didn’t let up, however, finishing the set on a dominating run to take the third set, 25- 15.

Cumby junior Savannah Kurn opened the third set with a pair of aces to give her team a quick lead. Later in the set, the Lady Trojans were able to push their lead to 15-9 when sophomore Ashlyn Hudson picked up a point on a kill. This gave the Lady Trojans the momentum they needed, and they finished the set strong, 25-13.

In the fifth and final set, Cumby was able to open things up on an 8-4 run, forcing Miller Grove to use a timeout. The teams traded points back and forth for a few possessions, before Cumby used a timeout as well, leading 11-7.

Miller Grove fought hard to get back into the game, but Cumby was able to hold them off, completing the 3-2 win by taking the final set, 15-10.

Sophomore Heather McCraw led the way for Cumby, finishing with 12 kills. She was closely followed by Hudson with 10. Other notables for the Lady Trojans were Neely Hammond who had eight kills and Azlyn Hornsby with six kills.

Defensively, Cumby got multiple strong performances, including a 31-dig game from Rylee Krotky.

Hammond added to her strong night by tallying 21 digs in the match, while Erin Morgan had 16.
