MILLER GROVE- The Cumby Lady Trojans went to Miller Grove Friday for their second district game of the year. After beating Yantis in straight sets earlier in the week, the Lady Trojans were hoping to get out to a 2-0 start in district play.

Things weren’t going Cumby’s way early in the opening set. After getting down 8-4, head coach Marissa Medrano called a timeout to try and regroup. The timeout worked, as the Lady Trojans quickly worked their way back into the game.

Thanks to three consecutive kills by Erin Morgan, Cumby was able to tie the game up at 14-14. Despite the momentum being on their side, the Lady Trojans quickly found themselves trailing again, as they went on to lose the opening set by a score of 25-23.

The second set saw more of the same, as Cumby was never able to take full control. Despite their best efforts to keep the game close, they fell once again, this time by a score of 25-21.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Trojans took their game to a new level. The Lady Trojans completely dominated the third set, winning by a score of 25-12 to force a fourth set.

Cumby kept their strong play going for the rest of the game, wining the fourth set as easily as they did the third. With the momentum entirely on their side, they won the fourth set by a score of 25-15, before winning the fifth set 15-5 to take the 3-2 win.

“The Lady Trojans played hard and never gave up,” Medrano said. “They communicated well and competed to pull out the win.”

Neely Hammond led the way for Cumby, finishing with a team-high 18 kills. Only Miller Grove’s Lainy Burnett had more with 19 kills.

Just behind Hammond was Heather McCraw, who had 14 kills and an impressive eight blocks. Nobody else for either team had more than two blocks.

Both setting things up for the Lady Trojans and also creating points of her own was Morgan. Morgan had an impressive 13 kills, as well as a game-high 27 assists. Kayti Brignon of Miller Grove was just behind her with 23 assist, as well as five kills and one ace.

Other notables for the Lady Trojans were Ashlyn Hudson and Azlyn Hornsby who had six kills and four kills respectively. The win improves Cumby’s district record to 2-0. As for Miller Grove, the loss drops them to 1-1 in district play.

Both teams will be on the road Friday, as the Lady Trojans travel to PTAA and Miller Grove travels to Como-Pickton. In both games they varsity are set to go first at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity teams to follow.
