CUMBY- The Cumby Lady Trojans hosted Fruitvale Tuesday for their first home game in district play. The Lady Trojans opened up district with a pair of road wins against Yantis and Miller Grove.

After a tough match against Miller Grove in which Cumby got down two sets and had to win three in a row, their momentum seemed to carry over into Tuesday’s match. The Lady Trojans got off to a very hot start, dominating their way to a 25-11 win in the opening set.

The second set went the exact same way, as Fruitvale had no answer for Cumby. Marissa Medrano’s Lady Trojans cruised to another easy win in the second set, once again by a score of 25-11.

Erin Morgan got things started early in the third set, serving seven consecutive points. Azlyn Hornsby followed her with six great serves of her own, as they completed their three-set sweep with a 25-6 win.

Morgan and Hornsby played big roles in the win, as Morgan finished with three kills and 20 assists. Hornsby had the second-most kills on the team with five.

The team leader was Neely Hammond, who not only had a team-high in kills with six, but also in digs with four. Heather McCraw and Ashlyn Hudson also had strong showings for the Lady Trojans. McCraw contributed five kills, and Hudson had three kills as Cumby cruised to yet another district win.

The win pushes their record to 3-0 in district play. After a preseason that saw them hold their own with much bigger opponents, the Lady Trojans have started off district play with a bang.

Cumby will have another busy week next week, as they host one game and hit the road for another. Tuesday the Lady Trojans play host to Pittsburg, yet another bigger school. Friday they travel to Alba-Golden to resume district play. In both games the junior varsity will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

Coverage of their Friday matchup with PTAA will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
