Lady Panthers pick up big win on the road

Mathis racks up 21 kills

COMO-PICKTON—The North Hopkins Lady Panthers traveled to Como-Pickton Friday for their first in a pair of district matches. The Lady Panthers entered the game with some momentum after beating Cumby, 3-0, in their last game.

The game started with a very close opening set in which the Lady Panthers were able to take the score to 25-23. North Hopkins was able to make the second set a bit easier, winning that one, 25-15. Finally, the Lady Panthers were able to complete the threeset sweep, winning the final set by a score of 25-21.

Senior Raylee Mathis had a great game, posting 21 kills and four aces in the 3-0 win. Fellow senior Selene Leon was the next leading scorer, finishing with seven kills and six aces.

Setting things up was Kortni Ferrell who had an impressive 27-assist game. Ferrell also had a pair of kills. Other contributors offensively were Makayla Buchanan, who had three kills and three assists, Mattie Pogue, who had a pair of kills and a block, and Molly Wiser, who had two kills.

Defensively, the Lady Panthers were fueled by senior Abigail Whaley, who ended up with 12 digs and two aces.

The junior varsity also won for North Hopkins, after losing the first set, 18-25. They bounced back and won the next two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-14. They were led by freshman Sara Attaway, who had seven kills, seven aces, three assists and a block. Salian Adair had a great game as well, finishing with three kills, eight aces and eight digs.

Ketly Conner set things up, posting nine assists, three kills and two aces. Harley Vaughn had a strong showing as well, with eight digs and three aces.

North Hopkins will travel to Boles Friday, where the varsity will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity to follow. They will play at home again Tuesday, Oct. 20 against Alba-Golden.
