Currently waiting for the UIL to allow play to resume, both the North Hopkins baseball and softball teams hope to bounce back with momentum in a pivotal part of their schedule. The Lady Panthers are currently 6-4, and the Panthers are 2-4.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Panthers opened the season, winning three of their first four games, the first of which came Feb. 21 against Dallas Life. North Hopkins opened the game with a four-run first inning and went on to win the game, 15-0.

After losing their next game to Quitman, the Lady Panthers bounced back with a 15-1 win over Detroit. Makayla Buchanan got the win, throwing all four innings, allowing just one run and striking out nine batters.

North Hopkins went on to win their next game as well, taking down Fruitvale in a close 1-0 game.

The Lady Panthers have gone .500 in their last six matchups, defeating Rice, 11-0; Sulphur Bluff, 17-1; and Detroit, 10-0.

Abigail Whaley earned the win in the 17-1 victory over Sulphur Bluff. Whaley allowed just one run on five hits in her three innings of work. Whaley also had a strong day at the plate, going two for three with a double and a home run while driving in four runs. Mattie Pogue also went deep in the game.

Their final win to this point in the season was the 10-0 victory over Detroit March 6. Whaley was once again the winner, going all six innings without allowing a run. She allowed just four hits and a pair of walks while striking out 10 batters. Savannah Nix had the hot bat, going three for three at the plate with a home run and four RBI.

BASEBALL

After dropping their first two games of the season to Edgewood and S&S Consolidated, the Panthers got their first win of the season March 7 against Celeste. The Panthers opened the game with a huge seven-run inning, allowing Geoffrey Stewart to work with a lead for most of the game. Stewart earned the win, allowing just one earned run in his six innings of work. Leadoff man Jessie Rivera had a strong game at the plate, going two for four with an RBI and a stolen base.

Later that day, North Hopkins took on Tom Bean and lost a 10-8 game due to a three-run seventh inning from Tom Bean. Brycen Gillespie had a great day offensively, going three for three, throwing in a pair of runs on a double.

North Hopkins’ most recent win comes March 12 against Collinsville. Collinsville got on the board first with a two-run first inning, but the Panthers answered back, scoring one run in the second inning and three in the third. North Hopkins added another four runs in the top of the fifth and won the game 8-3. Kevin Clement got the win, allowing just one earned run and racking up 11 strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
