SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lady Lions hosted Sulphur Bluff Tuesday for their second in a pair of district matches this season. The Lady Lions won the first match between the two back on Jan. 4 by a final score of 71-35.

In their eight consecutive wins leading into this game, a common theme has been Saltillo getting out to big leads early, and Tuesday was no different. The Lady Lions defense only allowed five points in the opening frame, helping them build a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The middle frames were all about offense, as the Lady Lions were able to put up 21 points in the second quarter. After leading 36-15 at the half, Saltillo added another 25 points in the third quarter.

The Lady Lions weren’t able to find much offense in the final frame, but it didn’t matter as they still walked away with a 68-35 win.

Saltillo shared the load offensively, with four players finishing in double-digits. Paisley Kastner was the leading scorer, racking up 13 points in the win. Chandler Bain and Kristina Wade each had 12 points and Brittany Peeples had 10 points. Other notables for the Lady Lions were Anna Reeder and Julianna Giles who each had nine points.

“We played really well,” coach Bill Giles said. “We were hoping our subs would have continued the momentum we built in the fourth quarter, but it was still a good win.”

The win makes nine straight for Saltillo and improves their record to 16-3 on the season.

The junior varsity also had a very strong showing, getting out to a 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Saltillo only allowed two points, while adding another 20 points to lead 32-7 at the half. The second half saw much of the same, and Saltillo went on to win the game by a final score of 65-13. The Saltillo junior varsity is now 13-4 on the year.

The Lady Lions will be back in action Friday after a bye Tuesday. They will host Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs will the junior varsity girls beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
