SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lady Lions hosted Avinger Friday for their fifth district game of the season. The Lady Lions entered the game riding a four-game winning streak with their last loss coming back on Dec. 19.

The game got off to a very slow start, with neither team able to find any offense in the opening frame. Saltillo scored just nine points, but they were able to shut out Avinger in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Lady Lions took off, posting 26 points while allowing Avinger to score just seven points to lead 35-7 at the half.

The Lady Lions kept rolling in the second half, scoring another 23 points in the third quarter and adding 12 points in the fourth quarter, to win by a final score of 70-26.

“We didn’t get off to a great start, but we played the rest of the game really well,” coach Bill Giles said.

Saltillo had four scorers finish in double-digits, with Anna Reeder posting 19 points to lead the way. Behind her were Chandler Bain (11), Brittany Peeples (10) and Allie Lane (10). Other scorers for the Lady Lions included Julianna Giles with eight points, Kristina Wade with six points and Paisley Kastner with two points.

The win improves Saltillo’s record to 13- 3, with a 5-0 district record. Staying steady in the top-10 of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rankings, the Lady Lions come in at No. 7 in this week’s update to the polls.

The Lady Lions travel to Avery Friday and return home Tuesday, Jan. 19 to take on Sulphur Bluff. In both games the junior varsity girls will begin at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams all to follow.
