SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lady Lions defeated Sulphur Bluff at home Tuesday night 83-26.

Saltillo started the game with their biggest scoring quarter of the night, posting 28 points while allowing only 7.

Sulphur Bluff was able to find their offense in the second quarter, but the Lady Lions still outscored them 21-12 to take a 49-19 lead into the half.

Saltillo opened the second half with their lowest scoring quarter of the game, just scoring 14 points, but they were able to hold Sulphur Bluff to just 2 points.

Finishing out the game outscoring the Lady Bears 17-5, Saltillo was able to secure their 83-26 win.

Chandler Bain led the team with 16 points. Jocelyn Ochoa and Anna Reeder also finished in double-digits, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively. Other scorers for Saltillo were Brittney Peeples, Paisley Kastner and Maddy Smith who each had 8, Allie Lane 7, McKenna Gurley 4 and Kristina Wade 2.

“We came out ready to play,” Coach Bill Giles said. “Twenty-eight points in the first quarter is an awesome start. Throughout the game we played with intensity on defense and shared the ball offensively.”

The JV Lady Lions also got a big win, defeating Sulphur Bluff 38-3 and not allowing a point until the fourth quarter. Ofelia Cabrera was the leading scorer with 13 points. Makensa Morris finished with 7 points, Briana Tawil 6, Reagon Speir 6, Yadhira Alonso 4 and Trinity White 2.

“I’m very proud of the way we played defensively,” Coach Dalton Herndon said. “We moved well, anticipated well and played well on the ball.”

This win makes the Varsity Lady Lions 22-7 on the season and 5-0 in district play. The JV team improved to 14-1. Look for Friday nights game against Avery in Tuesday’s paper. Saltillo will play again Tuesday, Jan. 28 at home against Union Hill at 6 p.m.
