AVINGER- The Saltillo Lady Lions traveled to Avinger Tuesday, looking to extend their winning streak to 12 consecutive games. The Lady Lions won their first match against Avinger on Jan. 8 by a final score of 70-24.

Much like they have done all season, Saltillo got off to a great start, with both their offense and defense firing on all cylinders. The Lady Lions built a huge 20-point lead at the end of the first quarter after outscoring Avinger 24-4 in the opening frame.

The second quarter saw much of the same, as once again the Lady Lions outscored their opponents by double-digits, allowing only six points while scoring 19 points of their own. Saltillo added another 13 points to their lead, pushing the score to 43-10 at the end of the first half.

The Lady Lions opened the second half with their highest scoring quarter of the night, posting 27 points in the third quarter. Avinger was only able to score eight points in the frame, and the Lady Lions took a 40-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Saltillo took their foot off the gas a bit in the final frame, scoring a game-low 13 points in the fourth quarter, but they still walked away with an easy 83-25 win.

“It was a pretty good defensive effort. We only allowed six field goals,” coach Bill Giles said. “We moved the ball well and played as a team.”

The Lady Lions got everyone involved in their explosive 83-point performance, finishing with a total of eight players scoring, with six of them finishing in double-digits. Leading the way was Chandler Bain who racked up 18 points.

Just behind Bain was Allie Lane and Anna Reeder who each had 13 points. Brittany Peeples and Kristina Wade each had 12 points while Paisley Kastner had 10 points.

The win improves the Lady Lions’ record to 19-3 on the season and makes them 10-0 in district play. Saltillo returns to action with a pair of non-district matches next week against Alvord and Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs.
