The Saltillo Lady Lions had a pair of back-to-back games this week, starting with a trip to Sulphur Bluff Monday, followed by a trip to Yantis Tuesday.

The Lady Lions got off to a slow start in their match against Sulphur Bluff, with the score tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. Saltillo was able to create a bit of separation in the second quarter to push the score to 26-19 at the half.

The Lady Lions found another gear in the second half, outscoring Sulphur Bluff 45-16 in the final two quarters, cruising to a 71-35 win. Anna Reeder and Julianna Giles were the leading scorers for Saltillo, finishing with 19 points and 17 points respectively.

Other scorers for the Lady Lions were Allie Lane with eight points, Brittany Peeples and Kristina Wade who each had seven points, Paisley Kastner with six points, Maddie Smith with five points and Chandler Bain who had two points.

“We struggled in the first half and couldn’t score, but we hung in there and had a good second half,” coach Bill Giles said. “We had good effort throughout the game and just had a hard time making shots.”

Saltillo got off to a much stronger start in Tuesday’s game against Yantis, posting 26 points in the opening quarter and adding another 16 points in the second quarter. The Lady Lions never allowed more than six points in a frame, and cruised to a 64-18 win.

Reeder was once again the leading scorer, outscoring Yantis with 23 points of her own. Bain and Peeples also finished in double-digits, posting 16 points and 10 points respectively. Other scorers for Saltillo were Lane with six points, Wade with three points and Kastner who had two points.

“It was a good district win on the road and a good effort overall,” Giles said.

The pair of wins improve the Lady Lions record to 12-3 on the season. Saltillo will return home Tuesday for a match against Union Hill. The junior varsity boys are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys to follow.
