Lady Lions, Lady Bears take home district awards

Reeder, Bain named MVP

The district awards for Class 1A District-24 were announced, and multiple players from Saltillo and Sulphur Bluff were awarded for their successful seasons.

Saltillo’s Chandler Bain and Anna Reeder were named the Co-MVP’s of the district. Senior Jocelyn Ochoa also took home a superlative award, being named Offensive MVP.

“We are going to miss Jocelyn,” Coach Bill Giles said. “She had a tremendous four years at Saltillo High School, on and off the court.”

Sulphur Bluff was represented in the superlative awards as well, with freshman Skylar Stanley winning the Newcomer of the Year award. Stanley was a big part of the Lady Bears’ winning season, finishing with multiple double-double’s, showing off both her scoring and rebounding abilities.

A pair of Lady Lions, Brittany Peeples and Maddy Smith, were both named to First Team All-District. For the Lady Bears, both Ann Dorner and Jada Wade were also named to the First Team.

Saltillo had four players on the All-District Second Team, including Kristina Wade, Allie Lane, Julianna Giles and Paisley Kastner. Dalena Di Donato and Angel Brown from Sulphur Bluff both made the Second Team as well.

The Lady Lions finished the season with a record of 31-8 and went undefeated in district play, earning a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Saltillo played Henrietta Midway in the Area Round and won 66-25. After that they advanced to the Regional Quarter Final where they defeated Slidell 51-43 in triple overtime. Their season came to an end in the Regional Semi Finals where they lost 42-34 to Eula.

“This was an outstanding season in not only the win total and reaching the Regional Tournament, but the way our girls played as a team. They behave in the classroom, get good grades and are respectful out in public,” Giles added.

The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears had an impressive season as well, finishing the season with an overall record of 22-13. The Lady Bears went 8-3 in district play. Sulphur Bluff opened postseason play with a 58-40 win over Miller Grove in the Bi-District round. They went on to defeat Bryson 49-44 in Area, before losing to Dodd City in the Regional Quarter Finals.
