Lady Lions go undefeated in Miller Grove tournament

MILLER GROVE — The Saltillo Lady Lions went 4-0 over the weekend in the Miller Grove Tournament. They opened the weekend on Friday against CHESS, the game started off close with Saltillo, leading just 14-13 after the first quarter, but Saltillo had a huge second quarter, outscoring CHESS 17-4 and never looked back.

Despite things being much closer in the second half, Saltillo had done enough to separate themselves and won the game 56-47. Anna Reeder was the leading scorer, finishing with 17 points, Chandler Bain had 14, Jocelyn Ochoa 8, Allie Lane 7, Brittney Peeples 5 and Julianna Giles 3.

Saltillo opened game two against Como-Pickton with a strong 16-2 lead, and by halftime, the Lady Lions led 34-10. Saltillo only added to their lead in the second half and won by a final score of 71-26. Chandler Bain led the team in scoring this time with 22 points, Anna Reeder and Jocelyn Ochoa also finished in double digits, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. Maddy Smith finished with 6, Brittney Peeples 5, Julianna Giles 5 and Paisley Kastner 4.

The Lady Lions kept the momentum going on Saturday, defeating Miller Grove 35-15. After only leading 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, Saltillo didn’t allow a single point in the second quarter and led 21-6 at halftime.

Brittney Peeples was the team’s leading scorer, finishing with 10 points. Also scoring for Saltillo was Allie Lane 6, Anna Reeder 6, Julianna Giles 4, Chandler Bain 4, Kristina Wade 3 and Maddie Smith 2.

In the final match of the tournament, Saltillo took on Clarksville and started strong, taking a 17-5 lead going into the second quarter. Clarksville bounced back a bit in the second and cut the deficit to 27-20 at the half.

Saltillo stepped up their offense in the second half, posting scores totals of 19 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth, winning the game 67-37.

Chandler Bain finished with 22 points, and Anna Reeder was right behind her with 21. Brittney Peeples ended with 14, Kristina Wade 6, Paisley Kastner 2 and Julianna Giles 2.

“Our team really played with a competitive attitude these last two days. It’s something we focused on for this tournament,” Coach Bill Giles said. “We have one more non-district game, and then it’s time. I feel we are ready.”

Saltillo’s next game will be Friday Jan. 3 at Quinlan Ford. They will start at 6 p.m.
