SALTILLO-The Saltillo Lady Lions hosted Bloomburg Friday, looking to extend their winning streak to double-digits, hoping to pick up their 10th win in a row. Saltillo’s last loss came back on Dec. 19 to LaPoynor who is currently ranked No. 11 in Class 2A.

For the first time in a while the Lady Lions weren’t able to get out to a huge lead early in the game. Bloomburg pushed Saltillo the entire first half, with the Lady Lions only able to create a three-point lead in the opening frame.

In the second quarter Bloomburg continued to keep things as close as they could, with Saltillo outscoring them just 15-13 to make the score 32-27 at the half.

The second half is when the Lady Lions were able to turn things up another notch, coming out and holding Bloomburg to just four points in the third quarter. Saltillo added 14 points of their own in the third quarter, before putting up 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead to their 61-40 win.

Anna Reeder was the leading scorer for the Lady Lions, finishing with a total of 18 points. Brittany Peeples and Julianna Giles were right behind her, posting 12 points and 11 points respectively.

Other notables for the Lady Lions were Chandler Bain with nine points, and Paisley Kastner and Allie Lane who each had two points.

“We had some trouble playing defense, but it was a good quality win,” coach Bill Giles said.

The win makes the Lady Lions 17-3 on the season and 8-0 in district play. Saltillo will be back in action Friday when they host Yantis for their homecoming game. The varsity girls are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow.
