Huge 1st quarter leads to win

BELLS- The Saltillo Lady Lions traveled to Bells Saturday to face Henrietta Midway in the Area round of the playoffs. The Lady Lions earned a bye in the first round, while Midway defeated Throckmorton by a final score of 52-40 to reach the second round.

Saltillo, who finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in the state, opened their game the way they opened most games this season by building a big lead early. The Lady Lions allowed Midway to score just three points in the opening frame, while scoring 13 points of their own to take a double-digit lead into the second quarter.

The offense slowed down for the Lady Lions in the second quarter, scoring just six points in the frame. Midway on the other hand found their offense, scoring 11 points in the quarter to cut the Saltillo lead to 19-14 heading into the second half.

The Lady Lions answered back in the third quarter with their best quarter of the night offensively, scoring 16 points. Midway was able to continue their offense as well, scoring 12 points to keep the Saltillo lead in single-digits.

Saltillo added another 11 points in the final frame, holding Midway to just seven points as the Lady Lions walked away with the win, 46-33.

Chandler Bain was the leading scorer for Saltillo, posting 13 points, in their 13-point win. Brittany Peeples also finished in double-digits, finishing with 11 points.

Other notables for the Lady Lions were Kristina Wade with six points, Anna Reeder with four points, Paisley Kastner with three points, and Allie Lane and Julianna Giles who each had two points.

The win makes the Lady Lions 24-3 on the season and advances them to the Regional Quarterfinals were they will take on Slidell. Slidell, who finished the season ranked No. 17 reached the Regional Quarterfinals by defeating Miller Grove by a final score of 57-43. This game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Celina ISD.
