Burnett leads team with 6 kills

MILLER GROVE—The Miller Grove Lady Hornets beat Rivercrest in three straight sets on Friday night. It was their second home sweep of the week, after sweeping CHESS on Tuesday.

Miller Grove opened the first set by scoring the first two points of the game. With things tied up at 6-6, Lainy Burnett scored points on back-toback plays, both points coming off kills.

Miller Grove didn’t look back after that, pushing their lead all the way to 17-9, when Rivercrest was forced to use their first timeout. The Lady Hornets finished the set on an 8-3 run and won by a score of 25-12.

Miller Grove set the tone early in the second set, going on a 10-0 run when the score was 2-2 to give them a 12-2 lead. Later in the set, Burnett pushed the lead to 18-6 on a kill. Jaylah Roberson assisted on the play.

The Lady Hornets led by as much as 24-11 in the set, before winning 25-13.

In the third set, Miller Grove found themselves trailing for the first time all night. Off to a slow start, Lady Hornets head coach Ana Billingsley called a timeout with her team down 7-2.

Miller Grove came out of the timeout strong and tied the game up at 8-8, when Rivercrest was unable to return a serve from Burnett. Things stayed close for the remainder of the set, and Billingsley called her second timeout with the Lady Hornets trailing 20-17.

Miller Grove trailed 23-20 before going on a 6-1 run to give them the win, 26-24.

Burnett led the Lady Hornets with six kills on the night; she also had three ace serves and two blocks. Wood was right behind her with five kills, along with five ace serves and two blocks. Kylee Saldana had three kills, and Lauren Bullard had two. Bullard also had nine digs and two ace serves.

Roberson had 10 set assists in the match. She also had seven digs and two ace serves. Harli Watson led the team in digs with 10 and had a pair of ace serves.
