Bessonett leads with 14 points

MILLER GROVE- The Miller Grove Lady Hornets hosted the Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs Monday for a non-district match. The two teams faced each other Dec. 1 when CHESS walked away with a 38-28 win.

Miller Grove’s Jorja Bessonett got things started by knocking down a 3-pointer on the opening possession. CHESS answered back with a strong run, leading 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Bessonett kept the offense going in the second quarter, racking up six points in the frame. Bessonett also picked up an asset when she found Lainey Burnett on a backdoor layup as time was about to expire in the half, cutting the deficit to 31-19 before entering the locker room.

The Lady Hornets found their offense in the third quarter, when Lauren Bullard provided a spark by knocking down a 3-pointer in the opening possession. Miller Grove created a number of turnovers with their press defense, bringing it as close as 35-31.

The Lady Hornets were only able to score five points in the final frame, however, and CHESS was able to run away with it, winning by a final score of 52-36.

Bessonett was the leading scorer for the Lady Hornets, finishing with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Bullard and Burnett were next with six points each.

Other scorers for Miller Grove were Brook Pursur with four points, and Harli Watson who had two points.

The Lady Hornets return to action Thursday with a non-district game against Detroit, before returning home Saturday to host Boles. Their road game against Detroit begins at 1 p.m., while their home game against Boles will begin at 11 a.m.
