MILLER GROVE—The Miller Grove Lady Hornets hosted Fruitvale Tuesday for their first in a air of district matches. The Lady Hornets entered the game on a three-game winning streak.

Miller Grove opened the game with a pair of kills from Kylee Saldana and quickly started to build their lead. A pair of aces from Lauren Bullard put the Lady Hornets up, 7-2, early, forcing Fruitvale to use their first timeout.

Out of the timeout, Miller Grove kept the momentum going, continuing to push their lead even further. Lainy Burnett fueled the rest of the set for the Lady Hornets, scoring five points on kills. Miller Grove went on to take the opening set, 25-10.

Burnett opened the second set just as strong, scoring three points on kills in the first few possessions. An ace from Harli Watson pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 11-5, and Fruitvale decided to use a timeout.

Miller Grove built their lead to 18-13 before allowing Fruitvale to go on a 4-0 run, making it a one-point game. The Lady Hornets fought hard to stay in it, but Fruitvale had the momentum and went on to take the set, 25-21.

The third set opened with Miller Grove on fire, scoring nine points in the first 10 possessions to take a quick 9-1 lead. Kylee Saldana played a big part in building the lead, picking up three aces along the way.

Things got as close as 14-13, but Coach Ana Billingsley used a timeout to try to get her team to regroup. The Lady Hornets answered by closing out the set strong, taking it to 25-16.

Entering the fourth set and trying to put the game away, Miller Grove got some help early from Burnett and Arean Wood, who each scored on a pair of kills in the opening possessions. Bullard followed them by racking up aces on three consecutive plays to put the Lady Hornets ahead by double digits. They went on to cruise to a 25-7 win in the set, taking the game, 3-1.

Miller Grove’s final home game of the season will be Tuesday against Yantis for the Lady Hornets senior night. That game is varsity only and will begin at 6 p.m.
