Lady Eagles off to impressive 14-4 start

Riding 7-game winning streak into break

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles currently await the return of UIL activities to resume with a 14-4 record on the season.

The Lady Eagles opened their season with a 8-6 win over Pewitt on Feb. 3. Summer Gilbreath got the win, going all four innings on the mound. Gilbreath also had the only multi-hit game, going two for three, while driving in a run and scoring once.

Como-Pickton dropped their next game to Chapel Hill, 4-0, Feb. 21. Later that same day, they took on Lone Oak and beat them, 10-1. Entering the top of the third inning with a 4-1 lead, the Lady Eagles added six runs in the frame to lead them to the win. Chloe Romero had three hits in the game, while Faith Watkins, Jazzmine Tapely, Mattison Buster and Alayna Chapman each had two hits.

Como-Pickten lost their next game to Bowie, 9-4 before winning backto-back games against Winnsboro and Chisum. Watkins led the way in the 12-5 win over Winnsboro with a huge four-hit game. She also had one RBI and scored three times. Buster got that win, and picked up the win again in their 13-7 victory over Chisum. Buster threw four innings in relief without allowing a single baserunner and struck out seven batters. Gilbreath, Maci Wright and Katie Morgan each had two RBI in the 13-run affair.

After losing to Winnsboro again Feb. 27, the Lady Eagles went on to win their next three games. The first came against Liden-Kildare who they beat, 13-2. Como-Pickton scored 10 runs in the first two innings and were fueled by Buster’s three-hit game.

Romero had the hot bat in their 6-1 win over Big Sandy, going two for two at the plate, driving in one run and scoring a pair of runs. To finish the three-game winning streak, Buster got the complete game win in their 5-0 shutout win over Bloomburg. Buster allowed just two hits and one walk in her four innings of work.

The Lady Eagles took their final loss Feb. 29 before starting their seven-game win streak. The first came in a 10-0 blowout over Detroit. Buster picked up the win yet again, allowing only two hits while striking out nine batters in four innings.

Como-Pickton won their next three games, beating Dekalb, 5-0; Linden-Kildare, 5-0; and Maud, 13-0, completing a four-game stretch without allowing a run.

The Lady Eagles extended the winning streak to five games March 7, when they beat Union Grove, 4-2. Romero led the way at the plate again, going two for three. She also drove in a pair of runs and scored once, as Buster picked up another win, allowing just two runs in the game, neither of which were earned.

Como-Pickton won their next game against North Hopkins, 9-1, before winning their final game to date against Yantis. The Lady Eagles opened the game with a four-run top of the first allowing Buster to work with a lead the entire game. Buster allowed no runs on three hits and struck out 14 batters in her six innings of work.

Buster has been the winning pitcher in 12 of the Lady Eagles 14 wins this season. Gilbreath and Watkins each have one win.
