Lady Cats' win streak ends with road loss

HALLSVILLE- The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats traveled to Hallsville Tuesday for their second in a pair of district matches this season. The Lady Cats won the first matchup between the two on Oct. 16, taking the game in straight sets.

The Lady Cats entered the match on fire, winning their last 14 consecutive sets. They were able to make it 15 straight, winning the opening set by a score of 25-20.

Hallsville answered back taking the next three sets to win the game. They won the sets by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18.

Sadie Washburn paced the Lady Cats, leading the team in both kills (26) and digs (14). Washburn also had five aces and a pair of blocks in the match.

Behind her offensively was junior Brooklynn Burnside. Burnside had seven kills, as well as three digs, a pair of blocks, one ace and an assist.

Setting things up for the Sulphur Springs offense was junior Peyton Hammack, who had an impressive 35-assist game. Hammack also had 10 digs, two aces and one block.

Junior Parris Pickett had a strong showing as well, posting 12 digs in the 3-1 loss. Pickett also had a pair of aces, one kill and an assist.

Addisyn Wall, Bre’Asia Ivery and Laney Hurst were all big contributors of defense, posting five digs each. Wall also had four kills and Ivery had one ace.

Other contributors for the Lady Cats were Kaslyn Hurley, who had a teamhigh five blocks, and Caroline Hurley, who had three digs. Senior Nylah Lindley provided a pair of blocks, one kill and one dig, while sophomore Mali Maeker had one dig.

Despite their ninegame winning streak coming to an end, Sulphur Springs still sits atop of their district with just one game remaining on their schedule. Coverage of their season finale on Friday against Longview will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
