The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats stayed in the hunt for a volleyball playoff slot with a 3-0 win over rival Mount Pleasant Tuesday.

“We were ready to play. The loss to Greenville on Friday (Oct. 4) was a wakeup call for the team. We are not going to have matches handed to us. We can’t coast. We have to work for the wins. We played well against Mount Pleasant, and we needed this win,” said Bailey Dorner, Lady Cats head volleyball coach.

Sadie Washburn paced the team with 16 kills.

Brooklyn Burnside was 7-of-16 on kills, Parris Pickett contributed 12 digs, and Peyton Hammack added 29 assists.

The first set went to the home team in 23 minutes. Sulphur Springs jumped out to a 10-4 lead and never looked back. Burnside added two kills early, and steady serves by Pickett and Czhela Moya helped the cause. In the second set, Sulphur Springs broke an early 2-all tie and bolted for a 10-7 scoring burst to gain the lead. The Lady Cats padded the advantage to 15-12. Sulphur Springs answered a Mount Pleasant rally with a strong finish, featuring kills by Sydney Washburn and accurate serves by Erika VanBenthem and Pickett.

Mount Pleasant fought hard to make the third set competitive, but the Lady Cats continued strong net play with kills from Burnside and Sadie Washburn to claim the victory, 25-19.

In sub-varsity action, Sulphur Springs won the junior varsity match 25-9, 19-15 and 25-17; the freshmen Lady Cats won, 25-18 and 25-10.
