The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats hosted Hallsville Friday for their first in a pair of district volleyball matches this season. Sulphur Springs entered the night on a three-game winning streak and with a 5-0 record at home.

The Lady Cats opened the set strong, with Sadie Washburn scoring on a pair of kills to put her team ahead, 4-2. Washburn stayed hot, picking up a pair of aces on back-toback plays to give the Lady Cats a 9-5 lead.

Sulphur Springs continued to add to that lead, forcing Hallsville to use their first timeout with the Lady Cats leading, 17-13. Junior Peyton Hammack scored immediately out of the timeout on an ace, before Hallsville answered back with 7-1 run to tie the game up at 20-20.

With the score tied at 23-23, Sulphur Springs picked up a point on a bad serve from Hallsville, and Brooklynn Burnside put the set away with an ace, giving Sulphur Springs the first set by a score of 25-23.

Washburn kept her momentum going, opening the second set by scoring six of her team’s first eight points. She had four kills, an ace and a block in that run.

The Lady Cats controlled the entire set, leading by as much as 24-11. Hallsville fought back, but Sulphur Springs was able to hold them off, taking the set, 25-17.

The third set opened with Hallsvile scoring the first four points and leading for a majority of the set. Trailing 11-15, the Lady Cats went on a 14-2 run to complete the three-set sweep by a score of 25-17.

Washburn led the way for the Lady Cats, finishing with 19 kills, seven digs, three aces and a pair of blocks. Burnside was the next leading attacker with seven kills, three blocks and two aces. Senior Nylah Lindley also had four kills and a dig in the 3-0 win.

Setting things up for the attackers was Hammack, who racked up an impressive 27 assists. Hammack also had eight digs and three aces.

Defensively, the Lady Cats were led by junior Parris Picket. Pickett had nine digs, a pair of aces and an assist. Bre’Asia Ivery and Laney Hurst had strong defensive performances as well. Ivery had five digs and two aces, while Hurst finished with four digs.

Other contributors for the Lady Cats were Caroline Hurley, who had one dig and one assist, and Kaslyn Hurley, who had one block and one dig.

This win boosts the Lady Cats’ winning streak to four games. In that time they have beaten Marshall, Mount Pleasant, Pine Tree and now Hallsville, the last three of which were by scores of 3-0. Sulphur Springs has a pair of road games before returning home to face Texas High on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The freshman team will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity and varsity games to follow.
