Lady Cats rip Hallsville for bi-district title, 3-0

TYLER — The Sulphur Springs Lady cats downed No. 1-seeded Hallsville, 3-0, in spirited volleyball action Tuesday.

The crowd for the bi-district game at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff gym got to see a competitive battle, won by a team that finished fourth in district.

Hallsville, the district champion, was defeated 25-8, 25-23 and 25-20 by the upstart Lady Cats.

Sulphur Springs advances will a 24-17 overall mark . The season ends for the 30-13 Lady Bobcats, who zipped through District 16-5A with a 13-1 .

The Lady Cats were impressive with the straight set win.

“We were nervous, but the girls channeled it positively. The Lady Cats were excited, and we jumped out to a good start and just kept it rolling. I think Hallsville was a little bit surprised, since we didn’t have a good end to district and they were on a winning streak,” said Bailey Dorner, Lady Cats head coach.

Standouts for Sulphur Springs were: Sadie Washburn with 13 kills and 12 digs, Peyton Hammack added 22 assists, and Erika VanBenthem contributed five kills.

The Lady Cats will meet Forney in the next round. The game and time have not been set.

Forney is 29-9 and went 10-2 in District 13-5A competition.

The Lady Jackrabbits advanced in the playoffs by taking a bi-district win over Joshua. Forney won straight sets, 3-0. They took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-23.
