Willis leads the way with 18 points

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats hosted Longview Pine Tree Friday, looking to keep their momentum going after winning their past six games. The two teams also met back on Dec. 22, when the Lady Cats walked away with a big 41-12 win.

Senior Nyah Lindley got the scoring started for Sulphur Springs, picking up the first basket of the night with a steal that turned into a layup on the other end. Lindley also knocked down a pair of free throws a few minutes later to push the Lady Cats lead to 7-0.

A layup from senior Bre’Asia Ivery pushed the lead to 9-0. Pine Tree was only able to score three points of their own in the frame, and the Lady Cats lead by six points entering the second quarter.

Sophomore Kenzie Willis set the tone in the second frame, knocking down a corner 3-pointer on the opening possession. Willis went on to score seven more points in the frame, including a layup late in the quarter to put Sulphur Springs ahead by 21 points.

With just 45.7 seconds remaining in the first half, Lindley hit one of two free throws, and the Lady Cats entered the locker room leading 27-5.

Senior Dalanee Myles opened the second half with four quick points. Myles made her first basket in the post, and followed it with a jump shot on the next possession. Sophomore Addison Wall followed up with a huge run, knocking down four 3-pointers in the quarter, helping push the Sulphur Springs lead to 48-11.

The Lady Cats never let up, especially on the defensive end, allowing just six points in the final quarter. Sulphur Springs scored another 12 points of their own in the frame, cruising to a 60-17 win.

Willis was the leading scorer for the Lady Cats, finishing with 18 points in the blowout win, 13 of which came in the first half. Just behind her was Wall, who knocked down four 3-pointers for a total of 12 points.

Myles ended the game with eight points, while Ivery and Lindley finished with seven points each. Other scorers for Sulphur Springs were Addyson Lamb and Jasmine Taylor who each had three points, and Baylie Large who had two points.

The Lady Cats will have their season finale at home Friday against Longview. The junior varsity is set to begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
