The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears traveled to Sulphur Springs last Thursday to take on Campbell in the opening round of the playoffs. The Lady Bears entered the night with a 12-7 record, riding a five-game winning streak.

Things got off to a very slow start as only a combined seven points were scored in the opening frame. The Lady Bears scored five points while only allowing two points to give them the slight advantage heading into the second quarter.

The scoring picked up a bit for both teams in the second quarter, as the Lady Bears posted nine points in the frame. Campbell scored seven points of their own and Sulphur Bluff went into the locker room leading 14-12 at the end of the first half.

Campbell had their best frame of the night in the third quarter, scoring 16 points in the frame to take a 28-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame the Lady Bears had their best quarter of the game scoring an impressive 23 points. Campbell was only able to match them with eight points and the Lady Bears walked away with the 49-36 win.

“We had a flat first half, it seemed like everything we shot bounced in and back out,” head coach Zandra Peyton said. “The girls pushed through and had a big second half, especially the fourth quarter where they scored 23 points. The ability to score late in the game and push through injuries shows how much heart this group of girls play with.”

Jada Wade was the leading scorer for the Lady Bears, finishing with a total of 17 points. Wade also had nine rebounds and four steals in the 13-point win.

Skylar Stanley had a huge game for Sulphur Bluff, posting a double-double. Stanley had 15 points and an impressive 28 rebounds to help the Lady Bears advance to the Area round.

Other notables for Sulphur Bluff were Bailey Neal who had six points and two rebounds, Alley Collet who had five points and nine rebounds and Tori Raine who had four points and four rebounds.

The Lady Bears advance to the Area round where they were scheduled to face Graford at Tioga ISD, with the date and time to be determined. Updates will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
