SALTILLO — The Saltillo JV Lady Lions continued their home tournament Saturday. They picked up where they left off Thursday, after defeating Leonard 48-19 and getting an overtime win over Whitewright, 32-20.

In their first game Saturday, they took on Dodd City. It was a back-and-forth first half with Saltillo leading 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and just 17-16 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Lions were able to add 8 points to their lead, making the score 29-20. Despite only being able to score 4 points in the final frame, the Lady Lions won the game 33-27.

Yadhira Alonso and Ofelia Cabrera led the team, scoring 10 and 9 points, respectively. Other contributors were Trinity White, who had 6 points, Regan Speir 6 and Briana Tawil 2.

In the championship game, Saltillo took on Pittsburg and started the game off with a 7-2 lead. The Lady Lions never took their foot off the gas, outscoring Pittsburg in each quarter, 11-6, 9-4 and 9-3 to give them the 36-14 win and the tournament championship. Brianna Tawil was the leading scorer of the championship game with 14 points. Regan Speir finished with 6 points, Bianca Castro 4, Trinity White 3, Ofelia Cabrera 3, Yadhira Alonso 3, Makensa Morris 2 and Caitlin Pearson 1.

“I am super proud of this team and their effort today. We had two great team wins today,” Coach Dalton Herndon said of his team’s championship weekend. “I can’t express how happy I am for them and their tournament championship. I wouldn’t want to coach any other kids.”
