Five schools are sending runners to state finals

Cross Country

Some of the best runners in the state competing in the state meet Saturday come from Hopkins County.

The Class 1A races start at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., and the Class 2A runners take off at 9:40 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. Participating in the State UIL Cross County championships Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock include:

MILLER GROVE

Isaiah Billingsley, Lexton Sly, Kobe Robertson, Riley Hasten, Tanner Hensley, Anthony Lester, Lance Davis, Kylee Saldana, Jolee Fox, Lauren Bullard and Jorja Bessonett.

Miller Grove is the defending state champions in the Class 1A division. The boys won the title in 2018. They only lost one runner, Grant Earp, from that team to graduation.The Lady Hornets took second place at state last year, Cassidy Seaney was the only senior runner on that team.

SALTILLO

Ofelia Cabrera, Bianca Castro, Yadhira Alonso, Makensa Morris, Kristina Wade, Jocelyn Ochoa, Chandler Bain, Raegan Speir and Brianna Tawil.

The Lions were third in state last year, and the only runner not to repeat is Ben Moore, who competed as a senior last year.

On the girls side in 2018, Saltillo was 13th. Sienna Collins ran as a senior and took 10th in her final state meet.

COMO-PICKTON

Maliyah Diaz, Aylin Gonzalez, Hannah Warren, Breanna Warren, Bailey Neal, Shelby Speed, Lexi Busby and Kara Tifft.

Last year the Class 2A Lady Eagles sent Busby, who competed as an individual.

NORTH HOPKINS

Jonathan Hatley and Mario Perez will be racing. Perez is making his second trip to state in Class 2A.

SULPHUR BLUFF

Bailey Neal is repeated as a state qualifier, racing in 2018 for the Class 1A Lady Bears.

Saturday racing weather is expected to be good with temperatures in the 60s. under dry conditions.
