Final rankings update of the season released

Wildcats finish No. 10

With the regular season wrapping up last week, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches released their final regular season rankings of the season. The three local schools that have been staples in the weekly rankings all finished inside the top 25.

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats, who have been featured as high as No. 8, ended the regular season ranked No. 10 in Class 5A. The Wildcats finished the regular season with a record of 26-8, finishing second place in their district.

On Monday night they defeated Lufkin 78-55 in the Bi-District round of the playoffs to advance to Area. Coverage of their Area round matchup against Red Oak will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.

The Saltillo Lions ended their regular season with a record of 30-4 and come in at No. 17 in the final regular season rankings. The Lions went undefeated in district play and earned a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

Thursday night they defeated Henrietta Midway in the Area round to advance to the Quarter Regional Finals to face Slidell. The time and location of the game has yet to be determined as of press time Friday.

The Saltillo Lady Lions finished just outside the top 10, coming in at No. 11 in the final regular season rankings. The Lady Lions went 28-7 this season, also going undefeated in district play and earning a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

So far this postseason, the Lady Lions have defeated Henrietta Midway 66-25, and they beat Slidell in four OTs by a final score of 51-43. Coverage of the Lady Lions results in the Regional tournament will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
