ETJGT concludes season in Mount Pleasant tournament

Tran takes 3rd place

MOUNT PLEASANT— The East Texas Junior Golf Tour wrapped its summer season up this week with a 36-hole tour championship. The event took place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mount Pleasant Country Club.

In day one of the tournament, Sulphur Springs’ own Mariam Tran set the tone, leading the High School Girls division by 3 strokes. Tran finished the day with a score of 79, with Katie Hart of Mount Pleasant and Grelyn Goolsby trailing her by 3 strokes and 5 strokes, respectively.

In the Junior High Boys division, Tatum Tran set a solid pace in day one, shooting a 94 overall on the day and giving himself a 13-stroke cushion over third place Landon Weaver of Mount Pleasant. However, Jacob Baker of Mount Pleasant was able to give himself a 14-stroke lead over Tran and ended the day with a score of 80. Isaac Stanley, also from Sulphur Springs, ended the first round with a score of 109.

In the second round, Tatum Tran was able to improve his score, finishing with a score of 91 and a total score of 185 for the event. It took Jacob Baker an extra 5 strokes in the second round, but he was able to hold on to his lead to win the event with a score of 165. Landon Weaver finished third in the division with a score of 205, and Isaac Stanley finished fourth with a score of 210.

The High School Girls division saw a very tightly contested second round. Mariam Tran started the day with a 3-stroke lead and improved her score in the second round by 1 stroke. However, Katie Hart improved her round by 8 shots, and Goolsby improved hers by 12 shots. They each passed Tran on the leaderboard.

Hart and Goolsby finished in a tie for first place, they finished the 36-hole event with a total score of 156. Mariam Tran finished just 1 stroke behind them, ending up with a total score of 157. The next closet finisher in their division was Isabella Greco of Mount Pleasant who turned in a score of 191.

The East Texas Junior Golf Tour will start up their 2021 season next June.
