Eagles win pair of games over break

COMO-PICKTON- The Como-Pickton Eagles hosted a pair of home games last week, starting with a non-district match against Sulphur Bluff Tuesday, Dec. 29.

The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start offensively, scoring just 10 points in the opening frame, but were able to find their offense in the middle frames. Como-Pickton scored 13 points in the second quarter, and 15 points in the third quarter to cruise to a 48-25 win over the Sulphur Bluff Bears.

Jojo Mejia was the leading scorer for the Eagles, finishing with an impressive 16-point performance. 10 of his 16 points came during the Eagles explosive third quarter.

Just behind Mejia was Braden Miller who had 11 points, eight of which came in the first half. Other scorers for Como-Pickton were senior Tucker Rutledge with eight points, Cameron Ray with six points, Dalton Morgan who had five points and Felipe Marquez with two points.

The Eagles turned around the next day to host Ore City, who entered the game as winners in two of their last three matchups. Como-Pickton got off to a decent start, scoring 11 points in the opening frame, before exploding in the second quarter with 18 points. Nine of the 18 second quarter points came from Miller.

The Eagles continued to play strong in the second half, and walked away with a 51-39 win. Miller was the leading scorer, finishing with 18 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Behind Miller was Mejia with 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half.

Freshman Kevin Hernandez was next with six points. Ray followed him with four points. Cayon Thomas and Marquez each had three points, while Morgan and Alex Perez each had one point.

The pair of wins push the Eagles record to 9-5 on the season. Como-Pickton has been on a tear of late, winning seven of their last nine games. The Eagles don’t return home until Friday, Jan. 15 when they host Cumby for their first district home game of the season. They are set to begin at 8 p.m.
