Eagles fall in bi-district round

Monk leads the team on both sides

ANNA - The Como-Pickton Eagles traveled to Anna Friday, to face the Alvord Bulldogs in the opening round of the playoffs.

Alvord got off to a very hot start, putting up 21 points in the opening quarter. The Eagles fought back, having a strong second-quarter where they posted 16 points of their own. Alvord was able to add one more score before the half however and led 28-16 at halftime.

The second half was very tightly contested with neither defense allowing the other offense to get going. Alvord found the end zone one more time in the third quarter, as did Como-Pickton. Despite a strong comeback in the second and third quarters, the Eagles lost the game by a final score of 35-22.

Senior Jackson Monk had a huge game, leading the Eagles on both offense and defense. Offensively, Monk had 123 rushing yards on 23 carries and one touchdown. Monk also had one catch for 17 yards, and a pair of 2-point conversions. Defensively, Monk led the team with 16 tackles.

Quarterback Jhonathan Mejia had a strong game, picking up 43 rushing yards, as well as completing a pair of passes for 24 yards. Mejia had two touchdowns in the game.

Other contributors offensively were Carlos Perez, who had 35 rushing yards on seven carries, and Braden Miller, who had 12 yards on three tries. Miller also had one catch for 7 yards.

Sophomore middle linebacker Cash Wilton had a huge game on the defensive side of the ball, including 15 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble. Felipe Marquez had a big game as well, finishing with 11 tackles and one sack.

Alvord will go on to face Italy, who defeated Rio Vista 28-21 in their first-round match. Italy enters the game with a record of 9-1, while Anna is 6-4.

Como-Pickton’s season comes to an end after a strong regular season in which they went 4-4 and 3-3 in district play.
