Eagles cruise to 2nd consecutive win

CELESTE—The Como-Pickton Eagles traveled to Celeste Friday for their fourth district game of the season. The Eagles entered the game with a 2-2 record and a 1-2 record in district play.

Defense was the name of the first quarter, with neither team allowing the other to score in the opening frame. The second quarter however, is when both offenses found their stride, with the Eagles posting 14-second quarter points and Celeste scoring seven of their own.

Como-Pickton added a field goal in the third quarter to boost their lead to 17-7, and they were able to shut Celeste out the remainder of the game, taking the win, 17-7. Jackson Monk led the way offensive

Jackson Monk led the way offensively for the Eagles, rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts. Monk was also the leading receiver in the game, racking up 61 yards on a pair of catches. Braden Miller had a huge day running the ball as well, posting 83 yards on 16 touches.

Quarterback Jhonathan Mejia carried the ball four times, picking up a touchdown and 23 yards.

For Celeste, it was freshman Qua Stephens who paced the offense. Stephens had 71 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.

Monk not only had a great game offensively, he was also the leading tackler for the Eagles. Monk had 12 tackles, two of which were for a loss.

The Eagles defense was able to create a number of takeaways, with Kevin Hernandez recovering a pair of fumbles and Mejia coming up with one fumble recovery and an interception.

The win makes Como-Pickton 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in district play. They trail only Cooper (3-0) and Rivercrest (4-1) in the district standings. The Eagles will host the current division leader, Cooper, Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be Como-Pickton’s senior night.
