Cumby and Como-Pickton will be in their final scrimmages of the season Thursday, as they polish up plays for the upcoming football year.

CUMBY TROJANS

The Trojans are looking to get on the scoreboard in this scrimmage after coming up short last week at Blue Ridge.

“They will run a split defense and spread offense,” said Tom Dracos, Cumby head coach, as he revealed his scouting report on Quinlan Boles.

Dracos, who has 34 Trojans out for football this year, said Monday’s practice with this squad was the best he’s had in his time at Cumby.

“The kids are excited and focused. They practiced with intensity the whole practice. I was really impressed, considering it felt like the sun was on the field with us. We still feel like we have a long way to go to be crisp on everything, but we’re getting there,” Dracos said.

The coach said the Trojans’ defense is a little ahead of the offense at this point.

“That always happens; the defense is ahead. Our secondary is really looking good. I have been really happy with our progress. We just have to start clicking better together. It will get there. Our offense is pretty complicated. Our quarterback and wide receiver are still figuring out tempo. I am hoping Thursday we can see the offense clicking in better and we continue to improve daily,” Dracos said.

Cumby will be in football crimmage action starting at 6 p.m. at Quinlan Boles, Thursday.

The Trojans open the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 on the road against Quitman.

COMO-PICKTON EAGLES

After a good first scrimmage, the Eagles want to take another positive step toward being ready for the grid campaign.

Como-Pickton players are still adjusting to the new system installed by first year head coach Ronnie Green.

Green, a native of Cooper, was picked to take over the reins with the retirement of Charles Swann.

Green said he has been very impressed with his team in recent workouts and the great attitude shown by the 40 players vying for spots on two squads.

“We will be working hard to get better this week on offense and defense. We are still adding slowly on both sides of the ball,” Green said.

The Eagles will be in a three-way scrimmage Thursday at Paris Chisum with Quitman also participating. The junior varsity will begin play at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m.

“This format will give us different looks for our offense and defense,” Green added.

The Eagles will begin the regular seson playing on Aug. 30 at Grand Saline, taking on the Indians at 7:30 p.m.
