Hurley leads with 31 points

SAVOY - The Sulphur Bluff Bears traveled to Savoy Tuesday, looking improve their record to 2-0. The Bears got a big win in their season opener when they defeated No. 16 ranked Dodd City on the road Saturday Nov. 14.

The Bears defense set the tone early, allowing just three points in the first quarter, getting out to a quick 13-3 lead. Keeping their foot on the gas, Sulphur Bluff had their highest scoring quarter of the night, putting up 21 points in the second frame.

Coming out of the locker room with a 34-6 lead, the Bears outscored Savoy 17-10 in the third quarter. Sulphur Bluff went on to score another 20 points in the fourth quarter, winning the game by a final score of 71-24.

Montana Hurley led the way for Sulphur Bluff, outscoring Savoy and finishing with 31 points. Hurley had 23 points in the season opener against Dodd City.

Two other Bears finished in double-digits, Shane Johnson who had 14 points and Brandon Branom who had 11 points. This was Branom’s second double-digit performance in as many games.

Other scorers for Sulphur Bluff were Blake Hume with eight points, Dewitt Brookins with five points, and Landin Dugnolle with two points.

The win improves Sulphur Bluff ’s record to 2-0 to open the season.

The Sulphur Bluff junior varsity got a huge win as well, defeating Savoy’s junior varsity by a final score of 49-9. Jase Cunningham and Dalton Klemptner were the leading scorers, finishing with 12 points and 11 points respectively. Just behind them was Shane Stanley who had 10 points.

Other scorers for the Bears junior varsity squad were Cayden Cascia, Marshall Johnson and Jess Cunningham who each had four points. Matthew Overly and Christian Gonzalez each had two points.

Sulphur Bluff travels to Paris Chisum Saturday and will host North Hopkins Monday at 7:30 p.m.
