AVERY — The Sulphur Bluff Bears ended their first half of district play on Tuesday night with a road win against Avery.

In a game that was close until the very end, Sulphur Bluff trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams scored game highs, with Sulphur Bluff outscoring Avery 16-15 in the frame but still trailing, 29-28.

The third quarter is when Sulphur Bluff was able to control the game, outscoring Avery 14-11 and leading at the end of a quarter for the first time, 42-40.

The fourth quarter was very highly contested with both teams trading baskets back and forth. Sulphur Bluff walked away with the 53-51 win.

Three Bears finished in double-digits, with Dewitt Brookins leading the way, finishing with 12 points. Brandon Branom and Shane Johnson each had 11. Other scorers for Sulphur Bluff were Montana Hurley, who had 8 points, Trayton South 5, Blake Hume 4 and Ryan Vance 2.

Sulphur Bluff will play again Friday, Jan. 31 in Bloomburg. The Varsity girls will start at 5:30 p.m. with the Varsity boys to follow.
