Going toe-to-toe with some of the best amateur golfers from across Texas, Sulphur Springs’ Brody Blackmon more than held his own.

This weekend, Blackmon competed in the 110th Texas Amateur, finishing in a tie for 24th for the event. This year’s event was held at the Dallas Athletic Club.

Thunderstorms in the Dallas area shortened the event to 54 holes. Organizers called for a two-hour weather delay at the start of Sunday, then a second delay of nearly three hours forced the cancellation of the final round.

Blackmon shot 1-over for the tournament with a total score of 217, putting him in a tie with Travis Woolf of Fort Worth, Thomas Allkins of Keller and Garret Martin of San Antonio. Ryan Grider of Lewisville, a junior at Baylor University, won this year’s event, shooting 11-under 205 over 54 holes.

At the time of the tournament’s cancellation, Grider led by four shots over eventual second place finisher Chris Wheeler of Addison. Scott Abbott of Dallas and Paul Gonzalez of Arlington tied for third and 2015 Texas Amateur champion Michael Cotton of Katy finished fifth.

Two other East Texas golfers finished among the top-50. Logan Lockwood of Van finished tied for 14th with a score of 1-under 215 and Will Holcomb of Crockett finished tied for 39th with a score of 4-over 220.

Blackmon advanced to the Texas Amateur after shooting a 64 to win the Last Chance Qualifier at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth earlier this month.
