SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lady Lions continued their impressive season Tuesday night with a huge 72-20 win at home against Avinger.

The Lady Lions scored the first 7 points of the game in the opening few minutes, and it was never much of a contest from that point on. In the final minute of the first quarter a Brittney Peeples 3-pointer gave Saltillo a 15-4 lead.

Saltillo kept their foot on the gas and extended their lead to 30-10 at one point in the second quarter and went into the locker room up 30-12.

The second half got off to a fast start as a pair of Jocelyn Ochoa 3’s set the tone, and the Lady Lions kept the momentum going, outscoring Avinger 19-4 in the quarter.

Saltillo had its highest scoring quarter of the night in the fourth, putting up 23 points as a team and only allowed Avinger to 4, giving them the 72-20 win.

“I wasn’t real happy with our sluggish first half, but a good halftime speech got us going,” Coach Bill Giles said. “I like the way we responded in the second half and was pleased with our effort in the final two quarters. Good team win.”

Anna Reeder led the team with another 20-point performance, and Jocelyn Ochoa and Brittney Peeples each finished in double digits, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. Other scorers for the Lady Lions were Allie Lane 7, Chandler Bain 6, Kristina Wade 5, Julianna Giles 5, McKenna Gurley 2 and Paisley Kastner 2.

Saltillo will try to remain undefeated in district play Friday Jan. 17 in Bloomburg at 5:30 p.m.
