Peggy Joyce Castle Weatherford, age 84, passed from her earthly life on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022 in Sulphur Springs, surrounded by her loving family.

She was joyfully reunited with her three infant children, each lost in childbirth.

Joyce was born March 25, 1938 in Saltillo, Texas, the second of four children born to James Aubrey and Hazel Moline Poor Castle, and raised in the Greenwood community.

She was a graduate of Saltillo High School, class of 1955.

On Dec. 3, 1955, Joyce married Billy Neal Weatherford (son of Pleas and Wanda Weatherford) in Franklin County. Her high school beau turned husband would become her lifelong love and soulmate. The two would start their life together in Mount Vernon, before moving to Garland, Texas.

Joyce was particularly proud of her role of working mother, raising the couple’s son, Jason, while establishing and building a career for herself.

She served in the role of Church Secretary for Second Baptist Church of Garland for several years, before entering the medical field as the Office Manager for the practice of Drs. Hoffman and Trostel, also in Garland. She continued working for the practice after she and Bill returned to Mount Vernon in 1988/89 to establish their poultry business.

After retiring from employment in the metroplex (and the daily commute it entailed), she found fulfilling work in the office of Drs. Moore and McKellar in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

Joyce and Bill worked shoulder to shoulder in the poultry business for 33 years, expanding their original operation and welcoming the next generation into the business, before retiring just two years ago at the age of 82.

Always mindful of giving back, Joyce served on the Cypress Springs Water Board, the Greenwood Cemetery Board, Franklin County Poultry Board, as well as the Advisory Board for Pilgrims Poultry. She also leaves a legacy as a caregiver, having selflessly attended to her parents, parents-in-law, brother, aunts and uncles, during their respective challenges.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon and remained active in Sunday School and church activities for as long as her health permitted.

Joyce is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years, Bill Weatherford; son, Jason Weatherford; daughter-inlaw, Ronda Weatherford; grandchildren, Brandon Weatherford (and wife Kindell), Jesica Weatherford Edwards (and husband Jeremey), and Summer Weatherford and partner, Juan Tovar; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Weatherford, Layken Edwards, Landri Edwards and Layne Tovar.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; infant sons, James Daniel Weatherford and Jon Michael Weatherford; infant daughter, Hope Weatherford; brother and sister-in-law, James Jerry and Nancy Castle; sister and brother-inlaw, Jo Ann and Louis Agee.

The Weatherford family will receive friends and loved ones on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the Weatherford family requests memorial donations to the Greenwood Cemetery Association: P.O. Box 153, Saltillo, Texas 75478.
