Funeral services for Mardell Williams Clayton, 95, of Sulphur Springs will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020 at Mitchell Chapel Church of God in Christ with Rev. Philip Harrison officiating. Interment will follow at East Caney Cemetery with Shanton Sanders, Jayden Evans, D’Corian Young, Cedrick Richardson, Christian Jackson, Cameron Kahn, Cody Clayton and Chris Clayton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ka’lieb Sanders, Ashton Roberts, Jireh Roberts, Kai Nixon, Craig Murray Jr., Carson Adams, Kinsler Page and Layden Harrison. Flower-bearers will be her great-granddaughters. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 at West Oaks Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clayton passed away Feb. 6, 2020 at her residence.

Mardell Williams Clayton was born May 4, 1924 in Hopkins County, the daughter of Earl Lennox Williams and Dellie Toliver Williams. She was employed by Hopkins County Memorial Hospital for several years. She attended school in the East Caney community. She became a member of the East Caney Baptist Church at an early age. She married Frank Clayton July 24, 1943 in Hopkins County. After marriage, she became a member of the Cherry Grove Baptist Church and was greatly loved by her church family. She loved sewing, cooking, traveling, going to ball games and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Clayton is survived by her sons, Melvin Clayton and Quon (Keitha) Clayton of Sulphur Springs; daughters, Frankie (Curtis) Sanders of Sweeny, Texas, Mollie Shepard, Linda Nash, Reva Wright of Sulphur Springs and Shanna (Patrick) Johnson of Harleton, Texas; 36 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Betty Williams and Ruby Williams of Gladewater, Irene Clayton of Sulphur Springs, Bertha Williams of Dallas; and very dear friends Mary Grays and Suzanne Lindley. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Andrew, Frank, Alvis Wayne and Earl Walter Williams; sisters, Carl Lillie Shaw and Savanna Jerry; daughter, Reba Clayton; and grandchildren, Ron Clayton, Yolanda Nash, Cassandra Payne and Jackie Shepard.
