Laura Ruth Melton was born Dec. 19, 1920 in rural Hopkins County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vander and Parlee Fisher, as well as two brothers, Birchie and Orville Fisher, and a nephew, Dan Fisher. Ruth Melton was married to A.W. Melton on June 18, 1940 and he preceded her in death.

From that marriage, Linda Cross, Phyllis Edmonds and Allan Melton were born and survive her today. Also surviving are grandchildren Christopher Cross, Laura Williams, Heather Forrester and Kendall Melton; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

During World War II, Ruth rode the train to Key West, Fla., where she joined her husband, A.W., in training for the U.S. Navy. 

Ruth and her husband returned to Hopkins County after the war and raised their family in a farming community just west of Sulphur Springs, where they operated a poultry and cattle operation.

Ruth was a homemaker and housewife and was active in numerous community clubs and activities. Her life-long hobbies included bird watching, gardening and running their cattle operation.

Services were held Tuesday, July 28.
