Awareness

The annual fundraising campaign A Walk to Remember will kick off Sept. 10 with a series of mini-walks leading up to their “Big Walk” in October at a new location. Organizers hope the event will raise community awareness of Terrific Tuesdays, as well as $10,000, which will help fund group activities for the next year.

Terrific Tuesdays is a weekly respite group for those experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia and related disorders, as well as their caregivers.

“Terrific Tuesdays has been a part of the community for 14 years,” said Director Tammi Reardon. “But people are still unaware of who we are and what we do. We want to raise awareness and show people the variety of resources that are available—home health care, hospice, caregiver support, you name it.”

A series of mini-walks will be held at various locations around Sulphur Springs beginning Tuesday, Sept. 10. The registration fee is $20 per person and includes a T-shirt.

Mini-walk dates and times include:

• Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at Terrific Tuesdays at FUMC, 301 Church St.;

• Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Sulphur Springs Health and Rehab, 411 Airport Road;

• Thursday, Sept. 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center, 150 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive;

• Friday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at Wesley House Assisted Living, 1044 Church St.;

• Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Pioneer Crossing for Seniors, 668 Gossett Lane;

• Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at Hopkins Place Assisted Living, 890 Camp St.;

• Monday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. at Carriage House Manor, 210 Pipeline Road;

• Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. at Rock Creek Health and Rehab, 1414 College St.;

• Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at Sulphur Springs Imaging Center, 109 Medical Circle; and

• Friday, Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Sunny Springs Nursing and Rehab, 1200 North Jackson St. “The Big Walk” will be Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Celebration Plaza, which is a new location for the event.

“We’re moving the event from the Gardens at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital to Celebration Plaza to provide easier access and more visibility. We’re also holding the event in the morning rather than the evening to better accommodate the people who routinely participate. We’re hoping to increase participation this year with these changes,” Reardon said.

Raffle tickets are available for $1 per ticket or $20 for 25 tickets. The grand prize is a beautiful, handmade, queen-size quilt made by local quilter and Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild member Linda Taylor. “In addition to the quilt, approximately 20 local merchants have donated gift certificates, apparel, services and merchandise. We have some fabulous prizes,” Reardon said.

All proceeds from the mini-walks, raffle, T-shirt sales and registrations go to fund Terrific Tuesdays activities with a goal of raising $10,000. T-shirts are available for $20 at the Senior Citizens Center, 150 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Anyone interested in attending a mini-walk, purchasing a T-shirt or making a donation, visit a Terrific Tuesday session at First United Methodist Church, or mail a check to FUMC, Attn: Terrific Tuesdays, 301 Church St., Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482.
