Volunteers needed for tax prep

AARP

Anyone good with details, numbers and fine print, AARP and friends and neighbors could really use some help.

The AARP Foundation is looking for volunteers to assist with tax preparation free of charge for anyone, particularly older, low-income taxpayers. Many people earn deductions and credits each year but don’t take advantage of them because they aren’t able to afford to pay a tax preparer.

AARP is looking for people to work with taxpayers directly, preparing tax returns. There is a large demand for bilingual speakers and dedicated interpreters.

No experience is necessary, and AARP will provide training. Volunteers must attend a 40-hour, week-long school Monday-Friday, Jan. 20-24. This school will provide more information about tax laws, how to prepare returns, and policies and procedures required to become a tax counselor.

Anyone interested should contact Gabe Willits at 903-243-3818, Mary Lou Foster at 903-485-4151 or Cheryl Spears at 903-885-8932.
