In 2020, 12 Hopkins County individuals participated in “Do, Well, Be Well with Diabetes” either in-person or online. A second series, “Cooking Well with Diabetes,” focuses more on food preparation and meal planning. Due to the pandemic, the Hopkins County face-to-face series was canceled; however, a great option to participate and receive some great recipes is now available.
“Fantastic Foods with a Flair—Cooking Well with Diabetes” is being offered online for anyone interested. My colleagues in south-central Texas are offering this course and have extended the invitation to anyone who would like to participate. This is a cooking school designed to help individuals with diabetes, their friends or family members.
Each Monday for four weeks a new topic will be released. Below is the schedule:
• Week of Oct. 26: Cooking with Carbs
• Week of Nov. 2: Facts about Fats and Substitutions
• Week of Nov. 9: Double-Pleasure Side Dishes
• Week of Nov. 16: Celebrating Sensibly with Diabetes
Virtual educational videos and cooking demonstrations will be released each Monday, and you can log on any time during the week to watch. A live question-and-answer session will be available each Thursday with a health expert. The cost is $15, but please contact the Fayette County Extension Office at 979-968-5831 if the fee is a problem. They don’t want to turn anyone away who needs the information.

Educational content will be taught through partnerships with Baylor Scott and White, Columbus Community Hospital, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, and Access Health/Women, Infants and Children (WIC). CREATIVE ARTS CONTEST
The Hopkins County Fall Festival Creative Arts Contest is rapidly approaching. I want to encourage Hopkins County citizens to enter items for the contest!
As a reminder, entry categories are Art, Clothing, Creative crafts, Decorated Cakes (will not be cut), Food Preservation, Handiwork, Holiday/ Seasonal, Horticulture, Photography, Quilts, and Woodworking. We also have a special division for Assisted Living/Nursing Home residents. There is an age division for all ages.
Items may be registered at the Sulphur Springs High School Conference Center 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 or 7:30-9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The Conference Center will be closed at 10 a.m. for judging and open for public viewing around 1:30 p.m., depending on number of entries and length of judging. Public viewing will also be held 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. No winners’ pictures
will be taken this year to avoid overcrowding.
