SSISD board takes action on personnel, other items

The Sulphur Springs School board took action on personnel and other items during the regular meeting of the trustees held recently.

After executive session the board accepted resignations for the following: Karla Burnett, Grade 3 ELAR teacher at Johnson Primary, effective Nov. 1; Lacie Stracener, HST Teacher at the high school, also resigned effected Nov. 1; Heath Robinson, CTE Teacher at the high school, resigned effective Dec. 16; all for personal reasons. Gabriela Lopez, a Title 1 Aide at Bowie Primary, resigned effective Nov. 18, due to accepting a new job.

New personnel approved include: Glennis Shannon Welch, HST teacher at the high school, will take the place of Stracener; Leah Redding, SPED Aide at Bush Primary accepting a new position.

Sarah Pence, former SPED Aide/SSHS will now be a SPED Aide at Johnson Primary.

In the public forum section - a public hearing was held on the Amended Application for Appraised Value Limitation on Qualified Property from Ashoka Steel Mills LLC, Comptroller Application #1768.

Under administrative reports -ESL Director Craig Toney reported on the Educational Performance of Bilingual/ESL Program for the 2021-2022 school year.

Toney said services are provided for 623 students with limited English proficiency. The bilingual and ESL program serve 606 of these students.

Parent denials were responsible for 17 students and 52 students monitored are in their first or second year after meeting state and federal exit criteria.

“We have two exemplary teachers for the first time and they were recognized by Dr, Richard Gomez, who designed some of the programs we’re using,” Toney said.

The teachers recognized with Lidia Mejia, kindergarten teacher and Karen Miranda, third grade, both from Travis Primary.

In the action items part of the meeting, along with routine matters, the board approved the following: All seven board members acknowledged “No Conflict of Interest” re: The Application for Appraised Value Limitation on Qualified Property from Ashoka Steel Mills LLC, pursuant to Texas Tax Code 313.

The board approved action to adopt the Findings of Fact of the Sulphur Springs ISD Board of Trustees in connection with the Application for Appraised Value Limitation on Qualified Property from Ashoka Steel Mills, LLC.

They also approved an Application for Appraised Value Limitation on Qualified Property and enter into an Agreements for Limitation on Appraised Value of Property for School District Maintenance and Operations Taxes by and between Sulphur Springs ISD and Ashoka Steel Mills LLC.

In other action - the results were canvassed and certified for the recent bond issue voted. The results were 3,901 against and 3,809 against the proposed $81.5 million bond issue.

Board members were provided with copies of the Head Start items for informational purposes: Director’s report for October; Policy council meetings for October and financial report for October.

The next meeting is Dec. 12.
