The Hopkins County EMS logo was in need of an update, so EMS Director Brent Smith reached out to the graphic design and audio/visual classes at Sulphur Springs High School.

“We couldn’t design anything,” Smith said. “That’s not really our forte.”

In November 2019, teacher Megan Tingle challenged her graphic design students to create new logos for HCEMS to use on apparel, stationery and media. Students submitted more than 70 original designs.

Smith and his team then chose seven finalists. They met with each student to refine and revise their submissions.

“It’s a great way for students to build their resumes with real-life projects,” Tingle said. “They had to sit down and do a design consultation with the client and take it all the way through the process.”

From that group, two students’ logos were selected as the winning designs. This is the first time either student has ever created and submitted a design.

Katherine Herd, a junior, won first place and a $250 prize with her design incorporating an EKG readout. She hopes to intern with a Fort Worth animation studio after graduation before working in advertising.

Senior Osiel Lopez won second place and a $125 prize. His design featured the EMS Star of Life inside an outline of the state of Texas. Lopez hopes to pursue a career in either graphic design or mechanics, possibly creating vehicle art, after high school.

The logos were unveiled Friday morning in a brief gathering in the SSHS Media Center.

“I definitely urge community leaders and businesses in our area to tap into the resources our school district offers,” Smith said. “We have enjoyed the partnership with the school district, and I already have another idea in mind — maybe for next year.”
