Friendly Competition

Get ready to win gold at the Sulphur Springs Senior Summer Olympics to be held next week.

The entire event is indoors, so the August heat won’t be an issue.

A 1 kilometer race will begin at 9:30 a.m., so anyone signed up to compete in that event needs to be at the ROC by around 9:15 a.m.

The games will start at 10 a.m., with events that include a beanbag toss, Frisbee golf, Nerf javelin, horseshoes, washer pitching, scooter races and wheelchair races. This year’s Olympics will feature a new event — Frisbee golf.

“The athletes get really into the games,” said event organizer Karon Weatherman. “They’re really competitive. Everyone needs to come out to watch and cheer because it’s just fun.”

Around 200 people are already signed up to compete, including nursing home residents from Quit-man, Mineola and Grand Saline. Athletes will be divided into four age groups — 50-60, 60-70, 70-80 and 80 and above. Participants using wheelchairs, walkers and canes will have their own category.

Trophies and medals will be awarded. Whoever wins the most medals will also win the Most Athletic award.

The Hopkins County Marketers will help out at the event with registration, judging and scoring, trophies and medals, and distributing snacks.

Preregistration is still open, so anyone interested in competing can sign up by calling Karon Weatherman at 903-885-1661 or dropping in at the Senior Citizens Center.

The Senior Summer Olympics will be held Thursday, Aug. 29 at the ROC at First Baptist Church, 115 Putman St. in Sulphur Springs.
